A new health and wellbeing centre is preparing to open its doors in North Tyneside.

Shields Health Hub – based on Hawkeys Lane in North Shields – will host general practice surgery sessions from 8am til 8pm, alongside access to other health services; such as advice on keeping active and support with mental health.

The North Shields Primary Care Network (PCN) – comprising of Collingwood Health Group, Priory Medical Group, Spring Terrace Health Centre, Nelson Health Centre and Redburn Park Medical Centre – have been the driving force in the new venture.

The PCN team – led by Clinical Director Dr Dave Tomson – have also worked alongside Northumbria Healthcare Trust and NHS property services to bring the space into new usage.

The project is a partnership approach as part of the AHSN NENC Healthy Happy Places Programme to explore how the design of places and spaces can support mental health and wellbeing.

Members of the local community have been involved with the project as part of an engagement day that was held on Monday 11th July.

Residents have helped by providing feedback on everything from the décor within the building, suggestions on what to include within the waiting area as well as ideas for the outside and garden area of the new hub.

As well as its core health and wellbeing focus, the centre also aims to provide more community-based support such as advice on financial matters, employment and housing, in the future.

You can find the Shields Health Hub on Hawkeys Lane, North Shields, NE29 0SF – the building is the former Priory Day Hospital behind Collingwood GP Surgery.
