What is Spirometry?

Spirometry is a simple and commonly used test designed to assess lung function by measuring how much air a person can breathe in and out during a forced breath. It plays a vital role in helping healthcare professionals diagnose, monitor, and manage a range of respiratory conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung-related disorders.

This service is available to patients aged 5 years and over who are living in North Tyneside and are registered with a local GP practice. Access to the service is via a GP referral, ensuring that patients who would benefit from testing are appropriately identified and supported.

TyneHealth is responsible for the administrative aspects of the service. This includes booking appointments, managing patient queries, and ensuring that test results are returned promptly to the patient’s GP practice for review and follow-up care. In addition to administration, TyneHealth also delivers a proportion of the clinical appointments, working collaboratively with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, who provide the remainder of the clinical testing.

What is a Lung Function Test?
A lung function test, also known as spirometry, involves breathing into a specialised machine that measures how effectively your lungs are working. The test assesses both the volume of air you can inhale and exhale, as well as how quickly you can breathe out. A trained member of staff will guide you through the process step-by-step during your appointment, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident performing the test.

How long will it take?
The appointment typically lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. The test itself is straightforward and not physically demanding, even for individuals who may already be experiencing breathlessness. You may feel slightly out of breath for a short time after completing the test, but this should settle quickly.

What should I do before the Lung Function Test?
To ensure the most accurate results, it is important to follow a few simple guidelines on the day of your appointment:

  • Avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand
  • Do not consume alcohol
  • Refrain from smoking
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict your breathing

It is also advisable to rest and avoid unnecessary exertion immediately prior to your test.

Can I take my medication?
If your doctor has requested that your response to inhaled medication be assessed during the test, you may be asked to avoid using your inhalers for up to 12 hours before your appointment. However, if you feel that you need your medication for symptom relief, you should continue to take it as necessary and inform the clinician on arrival. Your safety and comfort are always the priority.
